Named after Thomas McIntyre Cooley, a prominent and stellar jurist and law pundit of the nineteenth-century, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School has been around since 1971 to prepare, educate, and equip would-be lawyers for the bar exam and to be effective and competent law practitioners of their time. (1) In fact, since its establishment through the leadership of the then Michigan Supreme Court Justice Thomas E. Brennan, Cooley Law School has been consistent in producing ace lawyers, all of whom have the skills, knowledge, character, and sense of professionalism necessary for the practice of law. Some of these ace lawyers are ex-Senator Spencer Abraham, former Congressman Chris Chocola, and author and law expert Philip J. Prygoski.
Academic Programs
Unlike most law schools today, Cooley Law School opens its doors to non-bachelor’s degree holders, thus giving opportunity to more individuals. But in place of an undergraduate education, which is sort of an intellectual preparation for the students, Cooley Law School has designed a system that would give extensive training to those with no bachelor’s degree. (2)
Aside from Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master of Laws (LLM), and Doctor of Jurisprudence, Cooley Law School also offers joint degree programs such as J.D./Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and J.D./Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.).
Legal Education At Its Best
Among the independent colleges in the United States, Cooley Law School offers one of the lowest tuition fees. In fact, it ranked No. 10 in the list of 111. (3) Moreover, in the academic year 2007-2008, a student only needs to shell out $907 per one credit hour. (4)
Aside from a relatively lower tuition fee compared to its contemporaries, Cooley Law School also offers flexible schedule options for the students who are somewhat busy. As a matter of fact, Cooley Law School is the first school to have weekend classes specifically approved by the American Bar Association. (5) What’s more, classes are also offered in weeknights, therefore making attending classes comfortable to students with unmanageable daytime schedule. Undoubtedly, with these programs and implementations, many would-be lawyers have chosen Cooley Law School to be their training hub.
