Georgetown Law School

Georgetown Law School is one of the most prominent law schools in Washington, DC. Law School 100 has ranked Georgetown Law School as the seventh best law school in the US behind prominent law schools such as Cornell and University of Virginia Law School.(1) The 2008 edition of US News and World Report ranked Georgetown Law School as the 14th best US law school. US News and World Report also ranked Georgetown Law School as the top law school in law clinic programs, third best in international law (tied with Harvard law School), and also third best in tax law degree programs.(2)

Georgetown Law School was established in 1870 and holds the distinction as the first Jesuit-run law school in the US. Georgetown Law School also has the fourth largest law books collection in the US.(3) The school's Law Library has two main wings:the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library and the John Wolff International and Comparative Law Library. The Edward Bennett Library contains the school's US law collection, the Law Center Archives, and the National Equal Justice Library. The John Wolff Library houses the school's international, foreign, and comparative law book collections. The John Wolff Library also gathers law-related materials from other countries including Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, and Mexico. Aside from its foreign law collection, the John Wolff Library also collects important legal documents from international organizations such as the United Nations, International Court of Justice, the European Union, and the World Trade Organization.

Georgetown Law School offers programs for the J.D. (Juris Doctor), LL.M. (Master of Law), and S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) law degrees.(4) Georgetown Law School's J.D. program can be finished through three years of full-time day study or four years of part-time night study.(5) The school's LL.M. law degree programs include specializations in Taxation, Securities and Finance Regulation, and Global Health law. Georgetown Law School also offers a general LL.M. course program for foreign lawyers educated outside the US. Georgetown Law School is now also offering the M.S.L. (Master of Studies in Law) degree program specifically designed for working journalists, starting the 2007-2008 academic year.
