Law School Admission Council

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC), whose headquarters is located in the town of Newtown in Pennsylvania, is a nonprofit institution established for the betterment of the processes associated with law school admissions. (1) It was founded in 1947 by distinguished representatives from five of the best law schools in the United States namely Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, University of Virginia, and Columbia University. As of today, the Law School Admission Council has 202 law schools as its members.

Before applying to the law school they wish to attend, incoming law students need to register first to the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) and pass the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). (2) The LSDAS and the LSAT are both administered by the Law School Admission Council.

One of the departments made possible by the Law School Admission Council is the Law School Data Assembly Service. Acting as the liaison between the aspiring law students and the prestigious law schools, the Law School Data Assembly Service is responsible for the delivery of the students' important documents to their chosen law schools. (3) The important documents include school transcripts, test scores, recommendation letters, writing samples, and other biographical information.

The Law School Admission Council is most famous for the administration of the Law School Admission Test. The Law School Admission Test, which is conducted four times every year, is the mandatory examination taken by every single law student hopeful before being considered for a slot in the country's best law schools. (4) Because considering students for a place in law schools is such a tedious and stressful task, the Law School Admission Council created the LSAT in order to assist its law school members in selecting their prospective students by basing their decision in the test results. The LSAT is a standardized examination which contains a series of tests that will reflect the students' reading comprehension, analytical proficiency, accuracy, critical thinking, and reasoning abilities. The LSAT result is so important and so critical that an outstanding score may ensure a student's admission to his chosen law school despite his unimpressive Grade Point Average (GPA). (5)
