Canon Law Degree

Canon law, in its strictest sense, is a set of ecclesiastical laws implemented and observed in several churches, most commonly in the Catholic Church. (1) That being said, canon law makes up the Church’s legal system. Experts in canon law are appropriately called canon lawyers who spent time studying in some pontifical universities.

Canon Law Degree

Canon law degree, often called Licentiate of Canon Law Degree, is a three-year endeavor focusing on the study of canon law, its history, foundation, principles, and practical application. Most commonly, canon law degree is taken up by Church leaders, such as priests, and lay men and women who have interest in Church government and ministry.

Obtaining a Canon Law Degree

If you are interested in obtaining a canon law degree, you should have sufficient knowledge about the entirety of the Church, thus you must have obtained a master’s degree in theology or other advanced theology- and church-related studies; otherwise, you must have to earn prerequisite subjects such as Latin, philosophy, theology, and the fundamentals of the canon law within two years. (2) Like other advanced studies, canon law degree requires you to pass an oral exam and author a thesis.

Upon obtaining canon law degree, you are then eligible to pursue Doctor of Canon Law, which in itself takes another two years of study. Before earning your doctorate degree, you must first write a dissertation paper. (3)

Job Opportunities

After graduation you may think that the Church will be your source of employment; that is to say, you will work in any of the Church departments. This, of course, is a common notion, which happens to be partially incorrect. While it is true that most canon law graduates chose to serve the Church, there are those who opted to work for other institutions. For instance, there are some who are teaching canon law in pontifical universities. (4) Others might be practicing their expertise and knowledge as radio commentators, TV hosts, writers, counselors, and lecturers whose influences can reach a myriad of people from varying social classes, age brackets, countries, and cultures. Columbia Law Degree

The Columbia Law School situated in New York City, New York is considered one of the best schools of law in the U.S. As a matter of fact, Columbia Law School belongs to the Ivy League and based on the rankings given by the U.S. News and World Report on law schools, Columbia is included in the top five. (1) Given this reputation, getting a Columbia law degree is quite tough but well worth it. Notable individuals who were able to get a Columbia law degree include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Bainbridge Colby, and Charles Evans Hughes. (2)

Since Columbia Law School is one of the most distinguished law schools in the U.S., getting into this school is quite competitive — the number of students that can be accepted is far below than the number of student applicants. Each fall, a total of 370 students arrive as first year students in Columbia Law School, a number that is significantly below the total number of students who send their applications each year. (3)

Columbia’s reputation as one of the best law schools in the US has been a solid one ever since the 18th century. It was then known as King’s College and as a proof of its rigorous legal training and education, the United State’s first Supreme Court Chief Justice — John Jay — earned a Columbia law degree. (4) Today, getting a Columbia law degree is still quite a competition. Aside from having good grades during your undergraduate years, the quality of your undergraduate school can also affect your eligibility, as well as your LSAT or Law School Admission Test score, previous working experience, and other possible factors Columbia Law School might take into consideration when processing your application. (5)

A Columbia law degree will certainly give you an edge over other law school graduates. This institution is well-known for its excellent teaching programs and expertise in criminal law, business law, legal history, international and comparative law, legal philosophy, administrative law, and intellectual property law. Moreover, getting a Columbia law degree means you are under the care of an excellent faculty comprised of well-known scholars and academicians who are experts in their own fields. (6)

Columbia Law School

If you are seriously thinking of taking up law as a college degree, there is no better school to pursue this than in the Columbia law school. Apart from being an Ivy League member, Columbia law school also happens to have its base of operations in New York City, easily making it among the more popular of US law schools. (1) Of course, the fact that it is associated with the prestigious Columbia University all the more should make Columbia law school your preferred choice when it comes to obtaining a degree in the legal profession.

One thing you should remember about law degree programs over at Columbia law school is that these are not offered to part-time students. This means that if you have plans of eventually enrolling at Columbia law school, you should be really prepared, mentally and financially speaking. This is because a typical law course in Columbia law school can only be availed of if you are willing to pursue it full-time, where you are expected to devote approximately three years studying the complexities of US laws. (2) Summer and evening classes are likewise not known to be held at any given semester.

Every year during the opening of the school season in August, you should expect at least 369 other freshman law hopefuls trying to gain admission to Columbia law school. You can further expect this number to be cut in half by the time you and your fellow law students enter your second year.

Obviously, a very high standard exists in this law school when it comes to student admissions. You will really need to be armed with tremendous mental powers to be able to hurdle the admissions examinations and requirements that Columbia law school sets as pre-requisites.

Of course, if your concern is reference materials for your research needs, the resident school library, referred to as the Arthur W. Diamond Law Library, should be able to take care of that. Here, you can find over 7,450 different law journals apart from various statutes and cases as these were recorded in every single American state. There are also an innumerable collection of books from about 100 different countries and you can read these in at least 80 different languages. (3)

As such, the Constitution guarantees the political, economic, as well as the social right of each citizen of the country. Not only that, it also limits the power of government authorities including the judiciary, legislative, and executive bodies.
