Widener University School of Law

Widener University School of Law was established in 1971 as the Delaware Law School. Delaware Law School was affiliated to Widener University in 1975 and later changed its name to Widener University School of Law in 1989.(1) Today, Widener University School of Law has two campuses: one in Wilmington, Delaware and the other in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. (2) The Delaware Campus of the Widener University School of Law also serves as an East Coast Center for the National Judicial College and provides continuing legal education for US judges.(3) The Harrisburg campus is located near the Capitol building and has a student population of 500 (part-time and full-time).

Widener University School of Law offers programs for the Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master of Laws in Corporate Law and Finance (LL.M.), Master of Laws in Health Law (LL.M.), Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law (M.J.), Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD), and Doctor of Laws (DL) law degrees. Widener University School of Law also offers joint degree programs for JD/PsyD, JD/MBA, JD/MMP (Master of Marine Policy), and JD/MSLS. (4) Widener University School of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board of the Supreme Court.

Widener University School of Law gives its students the opportunity to have court case experience through its legal clinics. These legal clinics specialize in environmental law, criminal defense, and civil law. The law school’s Trial Advocacy Institute trains law students on proper courtroom trial conduct. Aside from its legal clinics and Trial Advocacy Institute, Widener University School of Law also offers certification programs in various law specializations. The Delaware campus has special certification programs from its Health Law Institute, the Institute of Delaware Corporate Law, and the Trial Advocacy Institute. The Harrisburg campus offers special certification programs through its Law and Government Institute.

Widener University School of Law also offers its students pro-bono work experience and community outreach activities through the Public Interest Initiative (Harrisburg campus) and the Public Interest Resource Center (Delaware campus). Law school students can also join in other activities through the school’s Moot Court (court room simulations), the Moe Levine Trial Advocacy Honor Society, and three law reviews: the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law, The Widener Law Review, and the Widener Law Journal.(5)
